Heating, cooling and refrigeration in Porter County, Indiana

Valparaiso to the dunes, Portage out to Kouts. Porter County spreads out, and we cover it.

On The Ground

Lakefront, town, and open country in one county

Porter County asks three different things of a heating system. Along the Lake Michigan shoreline through Portage, Burns Harbor, Porter, and the dune communities, you get the worst of the lake-effect weather and humidity coming straight off the water. Through Valparaiso and Chesterton it is a mix of older in-town housing and newer development on the edges. South toward Hebron, Kouts, and Boone Grove it turns rural, with longer drives, propane instead of natural gas in places, and outbuildings and shops that need conditioning too. We do not pretend those are the same job.

What Porter County does to HVAC equipment

The county is not uniform, and neither is what goes wrong in it.

The lake-effect snow belt

The northern end of Porter County takes lake-effect weather harder than most of Northwest Indiana. Long heating seasons and wind off the water mean a furnace here works more hours than the same unit twenty miles inland.

Humidity off the water

Shoreline humidity is why an oversized air conditioner is a real problem here. It drops the temperature fast, shuts off before it pulls the moisture out, and leaves the house cold and clammy. Correct sizing does more for comfort than more tonnage.

Rural southern county

South of Valparaiso the houses spread out, propane and outbuildings are common, and there is no dropping by on a whim. That is a good argument for maintenance in the fall rather than a diagnosis in a snowstorm.

Downtown Valparaiso and Chesterton businesses

The restaurants, bars, and shops through downtown Valparaiso and Chesterton run coolers, freezers, ice machines, and rooftop units. We handle refrigeration and HVAC both, so a bad night is one phone call.
